Your concerns about how to best approach teaching meditation in a hospice bereavement support group are valid ones. The group will likely be comprised of individuals from a variety of faith traditions or no spiritual or religious beliefs at all. In…
Hi Loren. Your experrience with meditation sounds very much like my own. I read a great deal "about" the dharma and meditation but never practiced. I was 55 years old when I did my first 10 day silent Vipassana meditation course, as taught by S. N.…
In my experience counting the breathe or thinking "breathing in...breathing out" can be a distraction. Just be aware of the natral breath as it comes in, as it comes out. No need to control respiration, just be aware...be aware. As soon as you reali…
My name is Robert. My interest in and practice of Buddhist dharma is from a universal non-sectarian perspective. I have been practicing Vipassana meditation, as taught by my teacher S. N. Goenka, for over 10 years.
I am happily married and blessed with three wonderful grown daughters and seven beautiful grandchildren. Although I am officially retired I work with my wife in our Asian import business. We manufacture meditation cushions and supplies and import Asian style home decor products from Thailand that are designed to promote a sense of peaceful living and inspire and support the spiritual practices of our customers.
I am grateful for my meditation teacher, Goenkaji, and the great good fortune of finding the dharma and the opportunity to learn and practice Vipassana (insight meditation) in this life.
What brought you to the Unfettered Mind community site?
I came to the NING site looking for an online sangha that approaches the dharma in an non-sectarian way. The discription of the Unfettered Mind group seemed to be open to all traditions and to focus on the essense of the teaching rather than promoting only one particular tradition . Although I have studied and respect all the various schools of Buddhist thought, I am probably influenced most by the Theravada tradition. However, I do not practice any rites, rituals or cermonies of any organized form of Buddhism. While I know that these practices can provide people with inspiration and encouragement on the Path within a given culture, I have chosen to focus on the essence of the teaching, the simple (yet often difficult) practice of 'Sila, Samadhi, and Panna.' I am always open to learning more about the dharma as it is understood in various traditions and cultures. I look forward to investigating Unfettered Mind and meeting memebers of the group.

I don't know how to use this site yet because I just "commented back" to your lovely, warm welcoming message to me last week. But it didn't actually record. Anyhow, I hope to be more responsive after returning from a retreat Ken McLeod is giving at the Mt Baldy Zen Center in SoCal. I will be back in touch in late May. Take care and again, thank you so much for your encouragement. Peace and the 10,000 blessings, Delia
