As to your question (what you "wonder about Buddhist practice"), the answer is, certainly. You don't have to belong to a group to be a Buddhist. When I took refuge there was no expectation of my joining anything at all. What was expected was that I would make efforts to wake up, which I've been doing (with uneven skill) ever since.

If you want formal refuge, however, you do need to find a lama who is willing and able to do that. I gather your choices are limited on Gozo, but Margaret can certainly be more informative in this regard.
