Rob, By coincidence, I had a painful experience with a yoga teacher today. She was aggressive and mean, and justified her actions by saying she couldn't help me and needed to tell me to go elsewhere. This is not necessary and is a way of avoidin...

About Me:
I practiced vipassana for 2 years and Dzogchen for 7 years. I appreciate the detail and close supervision available in working with Ken. I can hardly believe my good fortune in connecting with this tradition and such deeply developed teachers.

My work is family medicine. Buddhist practice has become the centre of my life. Besides work, fields of awakening include family life with my husband Mark, and our now moved out young adult children. Interests include hiking, nordic skiing, Scandinavian folk dance/music, yoga, and reading. I also go jogging, but mostly because I know it's good for me!

Currently my practice is very challenging, but also very fruitful. Gratefully, my family is, at least up to this point, accepting of the unpredictability of living with a person who is breaking up daily. I know not where it will lead, but it's at the point now where all I can do is keep on keeping on-it seems like I am being carried along on something way more powerful and knowing than I ever imagined and I just try to get into a position where I can stay afloat. I've participated in some river canoeing in the past. It feels a bit like the position I was taught to get into when the canoe capsizes - float on your back, with your gaze ahead so you can see the obstacles coming up, tread water lightly and hopefully you have a lifejacket on. Try to get your canoe and paddle, find an eddy and then back in the boat until the next dump. Hopefully your paddling partner(s) have been able to do the same and you continue your journey together.

Another report from the Realm of Reactive Emotion

Recently I have had a very interesting experience that was torturous, but helpful. In my relationship with my teacher, working together, we exposed the fear/ desire pairing. Desire was fed by the fear of not getting emotional needs met. Fear was fed by the fear of losing that which appears, at least partially, to meet those emotional needs. We cut this pattern and what arose was terror. The surprise was underneath that there was a powerful pushing force that most closely resembled anger. And eve… Continue

I thought this was an appropriate gift to a fellow Canadian for American Thanksgiving. Thanks for your contributions which are unique on the site.

Am I a student of Kens? I have never met him or spoken to him or corresponded with him - so I couldn't call myself his student. I have read and listened to teachings of his. So I have learned from him - what does that make me?

Thank you for your comment. I wanted to respond to your last post on the anger discussion.
Your post was very difficult for me to receive, but I did open to it as much as I was able and I noticed a shift when some of the warmth was received. Really, it was quite magical for me in a very turbulent way if that makes any sense, so, thank you. I have come to enjoy your posts very much. Thank you again.

Ken came to our studio for a q+a which was very well-received by the community here in Toronto. Unfortunately, I wasn't able to attend his workshop in Montreal but heard from Kristin that it was wonderful.

hi leslie -
i was profoundly affected by the retreat - a form of rebirth. I have felt like my blackboard has been erased. i sponsored a little family party at a bar on my way home from the airport - i needed a little space before re-entering the home atmosphere. it was a great inspiration, and eased things for everyone - especially me.
i am interested in helping to organize another retreat next year, and i know there has been some discussion about this among our colleagues, including at least peri and bill gardner. i think we will need an email list of the participants to manage this process. but before that, perhaps a small working group to establish a framework of how to proceed. i imagine others are working on this, but if nothing happens soon, i will begin to work on it.
i would like to be able to communicate with you directly via email - my email address is rmerchasin@mac.com.
please send a note to let me know how your re-entry went - you were there for quite a while.
with best regards - robert merchasin
