Thank you for including me in this group. I can see that, in addition to practice, it will be helpful for me to read some on these sites every day. I feel as if I have just stepped up to an incredibly rich banquet table and am going to try to resi...

Rob, By coincidence, I had a painful experience with a yoga teacher today. She was aggressive and mean, and justified her actions by saying she couldn't help me and needed to tell me to go elsewhere. This is not necessary and is a way of avoidin...

Last Words

Buddhist practice has cultivated in me an interest in states of mind before death, so naturally this little op-ed piece in the New York Times caught my eye: quotations taken from inmates’ last statements in Texas just before being executed. I found it moving. All were interesting. Here are a few that struck me:

"My heart goes is going ba bump ba bump ba bump."

"I am nervous and it is hard to put my thoughts together. Sometimes you don’t know what to say."

"Could you please tell that

My friend's wise girl....

My friend's wise girl strikes again. She ("Short-Pants) is 7, her younger sister ("Buddy-Roo") is 5. Here's the relevant section:

“Then I’m not your child anymore!” Buddy-roo screamed it at me.

This was after I refused her a DVD movie viewing during breakfast. She stuck out that bottom lip and stomped away.

“That might change,” Short-pants said to her.
“No it won’t,” argued Buddy-roo.
“You can’t be sure.”
“Yes I can.”
“Well, that might change, too.”

How does Short-pants know such things?

More Wisdom of Kids

Yet another priceless story, from the same family whose mom writes the Maternal Dementia blog. This one was written by the dad (a.k.a. "De-facto"). "Buddy-roo" (her blog pseudonym) is 5 years old, but clearly has a precocious grasp of relative truth...

This morning Buddy-roo announced to Maggie that she wanted a peanut butter and chocolate sandwich for breakfast.
Maggie said, "Ok, I can make you one."
Buddy-roo said,"I wanted one last night too, bu

Maternal Dementia

Just wanted to post a link to my friend Maggie's blog, which is quite brilliant. This entry, called "Parental Therapy", expresses the wonder thought that "Parenting is the most transparent form of therapy." I would add that it's darned good dharma practice too. Here's the excerpt that re… Continue

Franca,

Presumably I was one of the persons who "whacked" you during recent Ning discussion, (high school dress code. smiling robot), and I wish to apologize. My intention was to engage in lively critical debate, as my best real-life teachers, (Trungpa's tradition) had a ruthless talent for cutting through all the ego b.s. Unfortunately, my ill-tempered remarks might have discouraged you from further contribution to the Ning. And for that I sincerely feel very sorry...yes, I can appear to be a jackass.

I do wish internet discussion could better convey facial expression, body language, tone of voice, pauses between spontaneous conversation, and so on. Trungpa coined the phrase "first thought, best thought", but sometimes it's "first thought, worst thought". You are a worthy Ning contributor, and again, my apologies for my insensitivity.

Hi I loved your piece on emotion & reason. I've always said that we use reason to "rationalize" - we take all of our lies and ration them out & then do what we damn well please. Seems like feeling would be lots better!!

Where did you get the swimming baby elephant photo?

In Sri Lanka there was a domesticated elephant that a group of us rode. The guide poked him with a metal hook on a stick and screamed at him all the time we rode into the jungle. It was dreadful. Later, I found him chained; when he wasn't carrying tourists he was kept on a short chain tie to a post.

But, at the end of each day his keeper would let him take a swim in the lake. This picture reminds me of seeing him swim after realizing what the rest of his life was like.
