We all have questions.  Questions are what bring us to explore our lives through practice.  While teachers provide essential guidance, each of us must ultimately find our own path, make practice our own, and answer our own questions.

Probing Presence Online is a group of geographically dispersed students who meet via the Internet utilizing the Probing Presence guidelines Ken developed for his students in Los Angeles (The Tuesday Night Group). While the Tuesday Night Group meets in person in LA, Probing Presence On-line, or PPO, meets in a virtual space.

The Probing Presence guidelines outline a practice meant to develop an environment of awareness in which peers assist each other in answering their own spiritual questions. Participants develop a base of attention through a period of group meditation, then explore the physical, emotional and cognitive reactions they experience when contemplating their questions. The exploration utilizes a series of one-on-one interactions between a pair of participants. The entire group of participants, the interacting pair as well as those witnessing the interactions, rest attention on the arising reactions, maintaining a field of attention. This field of attention provides a safe environment for all to more fully engage in their experience, often bringing new clarity to the question.

There are currently three groups of students meeting regularly for PPO.
  • Wednesday Probing Presence WUTYL Columbus, OH
    • This group meeting is an example of a merging of the purely online version with an in-person group
    • The group meets at 7:00 PM Eastern Time in Columbus, OH, USA
    • The group's current moderator is Jim Ellsworth
    • Internet communication utilizes skype for audio-video (one caller) or audio only (more than one caller) interaction
  •  Journey To The West Online
    • This is an example of a purely online study group applying Probing Presence principles
    • The group meets each Tues at 7:00 pm New Zealand time (GMT +13)
    • The group's current moderator is Ann Braun
    • Internet communication utilizes skype for audio-video (one caller) or audio only (more than one caller) interaction
  • Sunday Probing Presence Online
    • This group is an example of a purely online meeting
    • The group meets at 7:00 PM Central Time, USA
    • The group's current moderator is Greg Germano
    • Internet communication utilizes skype for audio-video (one caller) or audio only (more than one caller) interaction

These documents provide a more detailed description of the practice. Keep in mind these guidelines are continuing to evolve, both through the experiences of the Tuesday Night Group, and the experiences of the PPO community, so if you have a question about the practice, we can start a forum to capture discussion. This document contains the facilitator guidelines, as well as the opening and closing chants. Tuesdaysv2.pdf

Sonia,
I really don't know why, but that's never stopped me from answering before :). As far as the refuge vow, I suspect it has to do with the outer, inner, and secret levels of refuge. There is a great discussion of these levels here.

I'm not even going to guess about the Immesurables. This is a great question for Ken.

I am not going to be able to host the Sunday night PPO group on this coming Sunday, April 19th. If you would like to host, please post a comment to let folks know. I'll be back on the following week.
Take care,

Hi, Greg. Really basic question: Why are the Refuge Chant and the 4 Immeasureables repeated three times but not the others?

here is a link to the recording

and here is a link to the transcript

It's easiest to just go through these links and use Dimdim's player and transcript viewer.

here is the link to download the recording: you will need the Dimdim player to play it back.

and here is the link to the transcript for downloading. not sure about how to view the transcript after you have it downloaded... an exercise for the reader :).

Thanks for mentioning this, Ann, a very good idea to post this info!

Hi Gerhard, It's amazing to experience Probing Presence- both as a participant and as a support for the EoA. I look forward to your presence and perhaps participation in future meetings.
